Do you think a Hairdresser has an underground wine Cellar full of Colour in case someone walks in asking for that exact Colour? Ah, no. A great Colourist knows what Colour Tones to combine to give you the Colour you want.
To build your own Colour is the ultimate freedom. You can create a mixture that incorporates only the hues and reflects you are looking for. You can tailor your Colour to just the right amount of Lightness, create the right balance, incorporate more warmth, add stronger Natural Tones, add depth, remove depth. Everything.
Sounds good, doesn’t it. And it is something you can do with our Range. It might take you a little bit to master your Colour mixer, but once you nail it, you won’t be able to see beyond it.
Stick with these rules
Keep Colours like minded - Cool and Cool, Warm and Warm.
You can mix either Cool or Warm Colours with a Natural Colour, to add a reflect.
Always choose the Natural Colour first, to determine how Light or Dark your want your Colour.
Try and stick with Colours in the same Colour level, e.g. 6 Dark Blonde with 6.22 Intense Violet.
How to build your Colour
Choose your Colour level. This is a reference point of how Light or Dark you want your Colour.
Choose a base Colour to build from. Your base Colour dictates how Light or Dark your Colour will be.
Choose your Colour mixers that you are going to add in for their pigment/reflects.
Choose your Ratios. Use 1/2 and 1/2 of each Colour when you want an even contribution of Colours or 3/4 and 1/4 when you want 1 Colour more dominant. We like to use 3/4 Natural with 1/4 of an Intense Colour, for a glow.
Here’s an example.
We got an email from Kristyn who is looking to recreate Emma Stone’s Hair Colour. She needed help building her Colour, particularly with combining the vibrant hues. So we broke it down for her.
Colour level: 5 Light Brown
We need a Brown hue that isn’t too deep as we want to see the Golden Tones we will add in.
Base Colour: 5.3 Golden Brown
It has the Warmth and Golden hues that we are looking for, with the right level of Lightness.
Colour mixers: 6.4 Dark Copper Blonde
We need to spice up this mix to get the cinnamon Chestnut Tones. 6.4 Dark Copper Blonde is our choice with the strong Copper Tones that will merge nicely with 5.3’s Golden hues.
Ratio: 3/4 x 5.3 Golden Brown + 1/4 x 6.4 Dark Copper Blonde.
The Colour brief is to have a Chestnut Brown, with more Gold than Copper. As Copper is a very strong pigment most of the Colour needs to consist of 5.3 with a small amount of 6.4 that can bring the hit of Copper and lighten the Colour slightly.
