They say men are from Mars and women are from Venus and nowhere is it more apparent than when it comes to their Hair. Where woman want to flaunt their Colour, men want their Hair to look like it always was, so of course, the approach to Colouring one's Hair will be quite different if you are from the opposite sex.
We vigorously support men Colouring their Hair and wish it was something spoken more openly about without it involving highlights. But, alas, when the time comes and you feel the need to start Colouring your Hair we asked our head Colour Consultant, Hanna, who is championing the men's Colouring movement, what is the most important advice she wishes for you to know.
When it comes to Colouring Hair, where do you think men go wrong?
I believe that there are two key areas where men go wrong with Colouring. The first involves the Hair Colour choice. Men tend to attract to Colour Shades with names like Chocolate because they’re looking for a sun kissed Hair Colour but these Colours immediately scream I’ve Coloured My Hair and have an orangey tinge. The second is they choose a Shade that is way too Dark for them, so their Hair just sits there on top of their head like its alien to the rest of their body.
So do you recommend any particular Hair Colour Shades to avoid this from happening?
The best Hair Colours for men are Natural Shades that are the same Lightness as their Natural Hair Colour, although one Shade Lighter is also generally ok. In contrast, Colouring your Hair Darker is a big no-no as it creates a disconnect between your Hair and Skin Tone and we want them to blend together as if they’ve always been there.
Plus, Natural Shades also offer the best Grey coverage (when mixed with a 20 Volume Developer).
Is there any budge room on this?
Yes, well, slightly. If you do feel like a Cool or Warm Colour is better suited to you, you can adjust your Colour mixture to 1/2 and 1/2 ratios. So 1/2 is a Natural Shade and 1/2 is a Cool or Warm Shade.
For example: Mix 1/2 a tube of 7 Medium Blonde with 1/2 a tube of 7.1 Ash Blonde or 1/2 a tube of 7 Medium Blonde with 1/2 a tube of 7.3 Golden Blonde.
Again, stick with a Shade that is the same Lightness as your Natural Hair Colour to ensure your Hair and Skin tone blend seamlessly together.
Tip: Mix your Hair Colour with a 20 Volume Developer.
