This year, it’s all about levelling up your Hair game. But to achieve healthier, more radiant Hair, we first need to ditch some sneaky habits that are quietly sabotaging our strands. These are the routines and shortcuts we’ve picked up over time—without even realising the damage they can do to our Hair and Colour.
We’re here to help you say goodbye to those bad habits for good and swap them with better ones that truly care for your Hair. Think of this as your ultimate guide to preserving your Hair’s health, vibrancy, and shine while protecting your Colour.

But that’s just the start. There are other Hair habits you may not even realise are causing harm. Let’s uncover them together.
1. Excessive Colouring
Are you guilty of constantly switching up your Hair Colour or layering Colour over Colour? This habit can lead to Colour Build Up, leaving your Hair dry, dull, and uneven. Instead of vibrant locks, you risk darker, lifeless tones.
When touching up Regrowth, avoid applying Colour all over. Use our Colour Top Up Technique to refresh your ends without compromising vibrancy or causing damage.
2. Sun Damage
We all love the sun’s natural glow, but it can be tough on your Hair. Just like your skin, your Hair needs protection—especially if you’ve got vibrant Colours like Copper or Cool Ash. The sun can fade, warm up, or Lighten your Shade, leaving it dull and dry.
Before heading out, protect your strands with a hat and a bit of conditioner combed through your ends. It’s a simple way to keep your Hair hydrated and your Colour intact.
3. Water Damage
Salt water might give you great texture, but left in your Hair too long will have you on the road to knotsville, while that extra time in chlorine will turn your Hair green. After a swim, a good rinse under fresh water will help keep your Hair healthy, while combing through conditioner or coconut oil before swimming can help lock in moisture and protection.
Here’s another simple habit that’s easy to forget in the colder months: finishing your Hair wash with cold water. Hot water opens up your Hair cuticles for a deep clean, but cold water seals them, leaving your Hair smoother and shinier. It’s a quick and easy change that makes a big difference.
4. Bad Brushing and Styling
Ripping through wet Hair with a brush is a recipe for breakage and frustration. Instead, invest in a Wide Tooth Comb and gently work through your ends in sections to untangle knots. We even keep one in the shower to comb through conditioner, helping it evenly distribute while hydrating your Hair. For a softer detangle, use it when you’re Colouring, toning, or just out in the elements.
Now, styling. This is a big one—my personal guilty pleasure: tying my Hair up too tightly, especially when it’s wet. If you have fine, delicate strands (hello, Light Blondes!), the pressure from elastics can cause damage. We’re swapping tight elastics for Claw Clips—less tension, less damage, and an added bonus: they’re cute.
5. You’re Using the Wrong Products
Your Hair routine might be suffering from mismatched products. When Colouring, make sure you’re not using a Developer that's too strong for your needs. The right shampoo and conditioner are crucial—choose formulas tailored to your Hair type to avoid over or under-conditioning.
And be cautious with clarifying shampoos. While they’re great for a deep clean, using them too frequently can leave your Hair dry and porous, as they open up your Hair cuticles.
6. Forgetting Your Colour
Putting off Colour Touch Ups might not hurt your Hair, but it can damage your relationship with your Hair Colour. The longer you wait, the more you start feeling disconnected from that fresh, vibrant shade. Regrowth can quickly turn from a minor inconvenience to a source of dread, and before you know it, Colouring feels like a chore.
Instead of letting it pile up, treat your Colour refresh like an essential appointment. Set a date in your calendar—monthly or fortnightly—and stick to it. That way, you’ll always be ready for a fresh Colour, know when to reorder, and keep your Hair looking its best for every occasion.
